Homemade hoisin sauce
Homemade hoisin sauce with miso
How fun is it to make your own hoisin sauce and always have it on hand? The sauce is widely used in Asian marinades and is often listed as a flavouring in supermarket recipes and on blogs. Ready-made hoisin sauce contains quite a few additives and E-numbers. This hoisin is made by you with miso, a fermented paste of soybeans. It also contains rice, salt, and water, along with some alcohol used during fermentation. All in all, it's a lot purer than hoisin from a jar and fun to make!
Ingredients: 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 gram (half a teaspoon) Chinese 5 spice 150 grams red miso (available at Asian shops) 150 grams maple syrup or liquid honey 2 tablespoons rice vinegar or white wine vinegar A well-cleaned (jam) jar with a clean lid
Let's get started: Sauté the garlic in the oil over low heat. Add the 5 spice and stir briefly. Then add all the other ingredients, let it simmer gently, and stir well for 5 minutes. Pour the hoisin into the clean jar and let it cool completely before placing it in the fridge. Your own hoisin sauce will keep well for at least 2 months in the fridge.
Enjoy!
